Matt is one of our favourite finishes at Kutchenhaus. Whether you choose matt, supermatt or ultramatt, these soft, velvety textures are available across several of our ranges, including the ever-popular Easytouch and Softline. They add a beautifully smooth finish to your kitchen, working just as well in contemporary kitchens as they do in more traditional kitchen designs.
However, matt surfaces require a little extra care to keep them looking their best. So if you’re wondering how to clean a matt kitchen, we’ve shared our expert tips below. To see our matt finishes in person, visit a local showroom or download our brochure for more inspiration.
Are Matt Kitchen Units Easy to Clean?
Matt kitchen cupboards and surfaces require a little more care to clean compared to gloss finishes. Because they don’t reflect light in the same way, smudges and stains can be harder to spot, and when wiping them down, using the wrong products can leave streaks behind.
Matt finishes are also microporous, meaning they have a fine texture that can trap dirt and grease. That’s why regular, gentle cleaning is so important.
The good news? With the right products and a consistent routine, matt kitchens are easy to maintain. A quick daily wipe-down will keep your matt finish looking effortlessly clean, so your kitchen always looks fresh.
How to Clean Matt Kitchen Cupboards
With the right approach, keeping your matt kitchen clean is simple. Knowing how to care for the surface properly will help preserve its beautiful, velvety finish for years to come. Follow these tried-and-tested tips to keep your cupboards looking their best - and if you're giving your whole kitchen a refresh, don’t miss our full kitchen cleaning guide for even more expert advice.
Use Warm, Soapy Water
Start with a clean, cotton cloth and a small amount of warm water mixed with gentle washing-up liquid. Wipe in light, circular motions to avoid damaging the finish, paying close attention to handles, corners and hinges - all common areas for build-up.
Dry the surface immediately after cleaning with a clean, dry cloth to avoid streaks. Avoid soaking the surface or using too much product, as excess moisture can lead to marks on matt kitchen cupboards.
Whenever you are using a cloth to clean or dry, ensure the cloth is clean and thoroughly rinsed.
Try Vinegar for Tougher Marks
For more persistent smudges or greasy areas, vinegar can be a natural and effective solution. Mix a small amount of vinegar with warm water, apply with a cotton cloth, and wipe gently.
Vinegar works especially well in harder-to-reach areas and helps prevent future build-up. As always, finish by drying the surface thoroughly.
How to Deal with Stubborn Stains on Matt Finishes
If soapy water and vinegar aren’t quite enough, you can make a gentle cleaning paste using bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Apply the paste to the stain, leave it to sit briefly, then rub gently in small circles. Finish by wiping down with warm, soapy water, followed by a dry cloth.
What's the Best Cleaner for Matt Kitchen Cupboards?
If you’re wondering what to clean matt kitchen cupboards with, specialist cleaning products are available, but for most messes, you don’t need anything fancy. Never use glass cleaners or harsh chemical cleaners, the substances used can cause damage!
A combination of soapy water, vinegar, and (when necessary) bicarbonate of soda will usually be enough to leave your matt kitchen surfaces looking fresh and streak-free, as long as you apply them correctly and avoid over-saturating the surface
How to Protect Your Matt Kitchen Units
Prevention is key. Use gentle, non-abrasive cloths and avoid harsh chemicals or rough scourers, which can damage the matt finish over time. Quick, regular cleaning will help prevent stains from setting in – and if you do spot one, try to deal with it straight away.
We do recommend cleaning the inside of the units with a cleaning agent after assembly, to avoid metallic abrasion that can occur when screwing the units in, which could result in small scratches.
