Designing an eco-friendly kitchen can feel like a daunting task. You’ll need to consider sustainable kitchen materials, how to save energy in the kitchen, which energy-efficient kitchen appliances to choose, and a whole host of other factors when creating an environmentally friendly kitchen. Whether you prefer a contemporary or traditional aesthetic, thanks to our meticulous German engineering, you don’t need to compromise on design to create your perfect energy-efficient kitchen.

How does Kutchenhaus create Sustainable Kitchens?

There are several strategies we’ve put in place to ensure we create our eco kitchens as sustainably as possible.

  1. Choosing the Right Raw Materials

The environmental footprint of a piece of furniture depends on what it is made of, which is why raw materials have long been a focus area for Kutchenhaus/nobilia - both in terms of their origin and recyclability.

Our kitchen units contain a high proportion of recycled material, and our wood waste is used for heating. We source our wood from sustainable forestry, and nobilia is certified to the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) standard, which guarantees that the wood we use originates from sustainably managed forests and controlled sources. For every tree felled, we plant a tree. We also use recycled plastic to manufacture certain parts of our furniture, including the plinth feet upon which our kitchens stand.

  1. Building An Efficient Supply Chain

Our philosophy is “think global, act local”, which contributes enormously to lowering CO2 emissions through reduced goods transportation. 80% of our suppliers are based in Germany, and 50% have operations within a 50 km radius of our Verl (western Germany) site. We sell around half of our finished kitchens in Germany, and another 30% in nearby European countries. As a company so deeply rooted in our home region, supply chains aren’t an issue for us.

  1. Sustainable Production

Sustainable raw materials and self-produced electricity are key to our sustainable approach to production. We’re also actively working to reduce our carbon footprint and self-generate clean electricity for our production needs through solar installations. We heat our buildings with wood waste during the cold months, and during the milder period, we use the waste heat from our air compressors as a source of heat. We practice energy recovery from storage and retrieval machines; we use (reusable) packaging only when required, and by using certified disposal companies, over 60% of our waste is recycled.

  1. Transport and Well-Optimised Logistics

We use a hybrid logistics model, transporting goods via both vehicle fleet and rail. We use extra long containers and, as transport by rail generates much lower CO2 emissions than the same trip by road, this form of transportation is considerably more sustainable. We’re also optimising our route planning to cut down on diesel usage.

  1. Product Usage

Sustainability is now a factor influencing consumer decisions, and our environmental credentials have become a key reason why customers are choosing Kutchenhaus. We’re proud that our products emit such small amounts of formaldehyde that they meet the toughest requirements and are certified to the highest standards, such as CARB2, F4Star and Blauer Engel (blue angel eco label). We ensure careful inspections, zero-emission components and high quality for a whole host of parts and accessories that make kitchens greener, more sustainable and more convenient. Our recycled Xtra Ceramic Worktops, Pull-out Gardening and Pantry boxes and plant light systems all contribute to greener product usage.

  1. Maximum Durability

The longer a product lasts, the less often it has to be replaced. This is an important aspect of sustainability, as resources are consumed every time a new purchase is made. We know from customer feedback that our kitchens are easy to care for and typically used for 15 years or more, and this is thanks to our intensive product testing and rigorous quality checks. In the unlikely event you’ll need to replace a part of your kitchen, the kitchen’s modular structure means that individual components can be easily replaced using standard tools. We also guarantee the availability of spare parts many years beyond what is required by law. When your kitchen does reach the end of its life, disposal is important. As only items made of a single material can be easily recycled, the modular and detachable design of our furniture helps. The main component of the furniture is the chipboard, which is 100% recyclable - meaning old furniture could be turned back into new, modern pieces. We’re working towards achieving this with our partners.

  1. Social Responsibility

Sustainability also encompasses social development goals. Training skilled workers about the complexities of furniture production encourages targeted action and minimises faults and waste. In this way, skilled workers are an integral part of a sustainable economy. We’ve also been working with sheltered workshops to enhance inclusive access to the labour market for people with disabilities, who can then feel valued for what they do.

Tips for a More Eco-Friendly Kitchen

Whilst most people can recognise the need to make more environmentally friendly decisions, it can be hard to know where to start - especially when you’re designing an eco kitchen. We’ve covered our top tips for improving your kitchen’s eco-friendliness below.

Choose an Induction Hob

Choosing energy-efficient appliances and smart technology is a simple way to engage in sustainable kitchen design. As they use magnetic fields to heat cookware directly, induction hobs are faster, safer, and more energy-efficient than traditional gas or ceramic hobs, making them a popular choice for both eco kitchens and family kitchens.

Invest in Smart Lighting

Thoughtfully chosen kitchen lighting enhances ambience while reducing energy waste - a win-win. Energy-saving LED lighting is recommended for reduced power consumption and longevity, simultaneously bringing depth to your space, adding warmth and highlighting key areas.

Opt for Quartz, Ceramic or Xtra Laminate Worktops

Whether you’re designing a large open-plan kitchen, or want to make a statement with the worktop on a kitchen island, choosing a sustainable material for your worktop surface doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style.

Quartz worktops combine natural beauty, waterproof durability, and low maintenance, making them ideal for sustainable living. Ceramic worktops are scratch and water-resistant, providing a long-lasting, eco-friendly surface. Xtra laminate is a sustainable alternative to natural stone. A robust, water-resistant, and impact-proof material, Xtra laminate delivers both practicality and sleek modern style.

Bring Nature Indoors

Integrating plants and natural materials into your kitchen creates a calming, eco-conscious space. Large potted plants and trailing vines contribute to improved air quality and reduced stress - as well as looking beautiful. Whether you create your own herb garden on a windowsill, opt for lower maintenance plants like succulents, or choose natural textiles like linen and rattan for your soft furnishings, injecting a little nature into your eco kitchen makes a lot of sense.

Swap Solid Wood for a Como Oak or Milano Walnut Finish

Whilst it may feel counterintuitive to choose a wood-effect kitchen finish (as opposed to real, solid wood), they’re often made from recycled materials like chipboard, and obviate the need to cut down any more trees. Inspired by nature, both the Como Oak and Milano Walnut kitchen finishes offer a sustainable alternative to solid wood, providing warmth and character without contributing to deforestation. Wood-effect finishes pair well with a huge range of kitchen colours, from light, soft neutrals to dramatic, richer shades.

Smart Storage Options

Designed to keep kitchens organised and clutter-free, smart storage solutions reduce the need for excessive furniture or materials. Pull-out organisers, plus tall, corner and larder units, help maximise your space, reducing waste and improving the longevity of your sustainable kitchen. On a purely aesthetic level, smart storage is ideal for busy households aiming for a sleek yet functional space.

In-Built Waste Separation and Recycling Features

Our integrated waste separation systems have been designed to help families and homeowners separate waste efficiently within their kitchen cabinetry. Pull-out bins keep waste and recycling hidden and out of sight while ensuring easy access to create a clutter-free, organised kitchen while minimising odours and encouraging eco-friendly habits.
